The prevailing attitude of the police in America today is that we are the terrorists. Instead of "Protect and Serve", the new motto is "Us vs Them".
Police departments seem to be recruiting the type of people who love the uniform and the power. With the advent of the militarization of the police, we see a lot more cases of police killing anyone or anything they can. Dog killings are on the rise as are people being killed. The Federal Government is guilty of contributing to this new LEO attitude as they provide cities and towns with all sorts of military equipment including MRAPs, and M-16s.http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/04/sunday-review/have-american-police-become-militarized.html?
The job of the police has become one of revenue raisers for the masters that they serve, rather than protecting and serving the law abiding public. Look to the huge increase in so called "civil forfeitures" where police with no evidence of anything seize the cash of people who are traveling. They simply claim they "knew" the money was a result of a drug deal or was going to be used for drugs. Corrupt judges and prosecutors collude to make the seizure legal. It happens everyday.
On a more local front, the police in Carbondale are out of control. They have no interest in solving serious crimes, but as their main functions are fundraising for a corrupt city government or acting when needed as enforcers for the corrupt city government, it does not leave a lot of time for solving murders. Anyway, no money in murders, I mean we might miss a seat belt ticket. The firing of the former police chief was a good start, the department under him was little more than goons with guns. We shall see if the people who run Carbondale will put in a person who understands community policing, or will put in another corrupt thug like the old chief.
